The Oil palm tree is the highest oil producing tree on earth and has great economic importance. It has been cultivated for centures for its useful edible oil. Malaysia is the world’s leedingĀ producer of oil from the Oil palm tree fruits. Indonesia is the second largest world producer of palm oil.
Palm oil derived from the fruit and kernels of the oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) has been used as a source of food for more than 5000 years. Red palm oil is rich in carotene, satured fats and antioxidants such as tocopherols and tocotrienols.
Palm oil of the Oil palm tree is used as a cooking oil and ingredient in margarine. Locally all across Africa it is used widely in preparing many authentic traditional Africal foods.
It is also used to make soaps, washing powders, candles, chocolates, personal care products, glue, printing inks, biofuel and bioproducts. Palm kernel and fronds are used as a supplement in animal food.
The Oil palm tree is a gorgeous palm that can be used as an ornamental for large areas. It can be planted along avenues, boulevards, driveways and parks.
